Ombudsman hosts South African Delegation

The Ombudsman for the Defence Forces, Paulyn Marrinan Quinn S.C. received a delegation from South Africa in her Office in Dublin on 1st September 2009. The delegation, led by Lt. General Themba Matanzima , Chief of Joint Operations, South African National Defence Forces and Dr. Clarence Tshitereke, Chief Director for Research in the Ministry for Defence met the Ombudsman to discuss the structure and operation of the Irish Office of Ombudsman for the Defence Forces.
Lt. General Matanzima and Dr. Tshitereke had been sent by the Minister for Defence & Military Veterans of South Africa, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, in circumstances where there was draft legislation for a Military Ombudsman in South Africa and a degree of urgency about putting such an Office in place; to a briefing on Ombudsman Marrinan Quinn’s experience of setting up such an Office.
Lt. General Matanzima was interested in benchmarking and reviewing how the Office worked and served the interests of the Defence Forces. In advance of the meeting, Dr. Tshitereke had furnished the draft legislation for an Office of Military Ombudsman which the Ombudsman had reviewed for discussion and commentary.
