3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF OMBUDMAN INSTITUTIONS
FOR ARMED FORCES 12-15th APRIL 2011,
BELGRADE, REPUBLIC OF SERBIA.
PREPARATORY PLANNING MEETINGS- OFFICE OF THE PROTECTOR OF CITIZENS, REPUBLIC OF SERBIA, BELGRADE.
On the 1st of March the Ombudsman travelled to Belgrade for a two-day working session, at the invitation of Mr. Sasa Jankovic, Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia for detailed discussions about the topics for discussion and the Agenda for the Third International Conference of Ombudsman Institutions for Armed Forces. The Conference was organised by the Office of The Protector of Citizens and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), with the support of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia.
As a contributor to the preparatory meetings and a member of the Drafting Committee for the Memorandum of the Conference, the Ombudsman was joined by Mr. Anton Gaal, Chairman of the Austrian Parliamentary Commission for the Federal Armed Forces and Mr. Kjell Arne Bratli, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Royal Norwegian Armed Forces. At the conclusion of the meetings, the Ombudsman was invited to chair the Drafting Committee. These working sessions were also attended by Officials from the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia and Dr. Miroslav Hadzic, Professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences (FP&S), University of Belgrade who participated in a detailed discussion about the theme of the Conference following on from the two previous Conferences in Vienna and Berlin.
During this visit the Ombudsman had the benefit of the support and assistance of Lt. Col Michael McCarthy, Ireland’s representative at the Office of the OSCE in Belgrade.
