Ombudsman for the Defence Forces

OSCE ‘Expert Round Table’ Event in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia in the role of a Military Ombudsman in safeguarding the Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Armed Forces Personnel

22 February 2011

The Ombudsman was invited by the Human Rights Officer at the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) to participate in an ‘Expert Round Table’ event on the subject of Human Rights and Fundamental freedoms for members of Armed Forces personnel in Armenia. Due to the fact that this event was planned for February and the Ombudsman had already accepted an invitation from Mr. Sasa Jankovic, the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia, to attend preparatory meetings around that time, in advance of the Third International Conference of Ombudsman Institutions for Armed Forces scheduled to take place in Belgrade, she had to decline to make the journey to Yerevan to join the Expert Round Table discussions with great regret.

In view of the importance of the meeting in Yerevan, the Ombudsman prepared, and had translated into Armenian, an open letter/address to the Head of the OSCE Office in Yerevan. This submission was kindly read out to the meeting by the Irish Honorary Consul to the Republic of Armenia, Mr Jonathan Stark.
