Ombudsman Observed Easter Rising Ceremonies

The Ombudsman for the Defence Forces, Paulyn Marrinan Quinn, observed the ceremonies hosted on 12th April to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising.

Among those also present were President Mary McAleese, Taoiseach Brian Cowen; the Minister for Defence, Willie O’Dea TD and Army Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Dermot Early.

A compliment of 300 soldiers form all sections of the Defence Forces took part in the 20-minute ceremony, which took place outside the GPO, which was the headquarters of Padraig Pearse, commander of the volunteers during the rising. The ceremony ended with a fly-past by the Air Corps.

It is estimated that 2,000 spectators attended the ceremony.
